Some events quietly become part of a community’s identity.
That’s exactly what’s happened with the Festival of Soloists in La Esperanza, which returns for its 12th edition on Sunday 26 July 2026, while paying tribute to the man who helped turn it into one of the Canary Islands’ leading folk music events.
This year, the festival will officially be renamed in honour of Ildefonso Benítez Alonso, recognising his dedication to the event over more than a decade.
A Tribute to the Festival’s Driving Force
The open-air concert takes place in Plaza del Adelantado in La Esperanza, beginning at 7.00pm, with free admission for everyone.
The 2026 edition carries extra significance following the passing of Ildefonso Benítez Alonso last December.
A businessman, former councillor in El Rosario and passionate supporter of Canarian culture, Benítez played a crucial role in establishing and developing the festival from its earliest years.
To honour that contribution, organisers have decided the event will permanently bear his name.
Some of the Canary Islands’ Finest Folk Performers
As always, the festival brings together a strong line-up of respected voices from the Canarian folk scene.
This year’s performers include Ciro Corujo, Miriam Cruz, Luis Morera, Almudena Hernández and Mateo Felipe.
They’ll be accompanied by renowned Fuerteventura timplista Domingo Rodríguez, “El Colorao”, with musical direction by Marco del Castillo.
A Summer Highlight for Canarian Folk Music
The Festival of Soloists forms part of the annual Fiestas in Honour of Nuestra Señora de La Esperanza and has grown steadily since its launch.
Over the years it has welcomed many of the Canary Islands’ best-known singers and musicians, along with legendary folk groups such as Los Sabandeños.
Today, it’s widely regarded as one of the summer’s standout events for anyone who enjoys traditional Canarian music.
Keeping a Legacy Alive
This year’s festival is about more than the music.
By naming the event after Ildefonso Benítez Alonso, organisers are ensuring that the person who helped shape it will continue to be remembered every time the festival returns.
For lovers of Canarian folklore, it promises another memorable evening. For the people of La Esperanza, it will also be a fitting tribute to someone whose passion helped create one of the island’s most respected traditional music events.
