Award-Winning Varguita Cheesecake Returns to El Médano with a New Shop Opening on 22 July

Finding a really good cheesecake isn’t difficult these days.

Finding one that genuinely tastes of cheese rather than sugar is another matter altogether.

That’s exactly what Varguita Cheesecake has built its reputation on, and now the award-winning Canarian business is returning to where it all began with the opening of a brand-new shop in El Médano on 22 July.

Back to Where It All Started

The new premises, located on Calle Hermano Pedro, 5-1, officially opens at 6.00pm and marks something of a homecoming for the business.

It was in El Médano that founder Rayco Vargas first developed the idea of creating cheesecakes that showcased the quality of Canarian cheeses, rather than hiding their flavour behind sweet toppings and biscuit bases.

That philosophy remains unchanged today and is summed up perfectly by the company’s slogan:

“The cheesecake that tastes of cheese.”

One of the Best Cheesecakes in the Canary Islands

Varguita Cheesecake has gone from a local idea to one of the best-known cheesecake brands in the Canary Islands.

In 2024, it was named Best Cheesecake in the Canary Islands, and the business has recently earned a place in the final of the prestigious Fromago Cheese Experience 2026, one of Spain’s leading competitions celebrating artisan cheese producers.

It’s quite a journey for a business that simply wanted to let local cheeses take centre stage.

Now Available on Fred. Olsen Ferries

The company has also expanded beyond its own shops.

Thanks to a recent agreement with Fred. Olsen Express, passengers travelling on the ferry company’s routes departing from Tenerife can now enjoy Varguita Cheesecake on board.

That means thousands of travellers each week are getting the chance to sample a product made using locally produced Canarian cheeses.

Keeping Things Simple

While food trends come and go, Varguita Cheesecake has stuck to the same approach from the beginning.

Its cheesecakes are handmade, with the emphasis firmly on the cheese itself rather than elaborate decorations or overly sweet toppings.

It’s a refreshingly simple idea, but clearly one that’s struck a chord with customers.

A New Beginning in Familiar Surroundings

The opening will be marked with a small welcome event and a toast alongside customers, neighbours, friends and supporters who have followed the business since its early days.

Returning to El Médano isn’t just about opening another shop.

It’s about coming back to the place where the idea first started while continuing to build on the success that has made Varguita Cheesecake one of the Canary Islands’ best-known names for cheesecake.
