This one’s stirred things up a bit…
And you can see why.
What’s Happened
The Cabildo wants to make February 2nd the official Tenerife Day.
Problem is… that date already means something.
It’s the day of the Virgen de Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands.
The Pushback
A new group, Plataforma 2 de Febrero, has been set up to challenge it.
Their argument is pretty straightforward:
- They’re not against Tenerife Day
- They just don’t want it overlapping a 500-year tradition
Why It Matters
For a lot of people here, February 2nd isn’t just another date.
It’s tied to:
- Identity
- Religion
- History
So adding something new on top of it… doesn’t sit right.
The Bigger Issue
There’s also frustration about how it was done.
- Quiet decision
- Little public discussion
- No real response to objections
Which usually makes things worse.
Is There an Alternative?
Yes… plenty.
Even the platform says:
There are other dates available that wouldn’t clash with anything.
So the question becomes…
Why this one?
Where It Goes From Here
The platform is now trying to build support and push for a rethink.
Whether the Cabildo listens… that’s another story.
Worth Knowing
This isn’t really about a date.
It’s about how far you can stretch tradition before people push back.
And in Tenerife… tradition tends to win more often than not.
