Los Cristianos Harbour Upgrade Moves Forward… Massive 30-Tonne Blocks Now Going In

If you’ve been near Los Cristianos port recently, you might’ve noticed things moving a bit… now it’s stepped up properly.

They’ve started installing huge 30-tonne concrete blocks along the breakwater… around 400 of them in total.

Not exactly a small job.

Why They’re Doing It

This is about strengthening the harbour after past storm damage.

Los Cristianos is one of the busiest ports on the island… ferries, boats, constant movement… so it needs to hold up when the sea turns.

This upgrade should make it a lot more resilient long term.

How They’re Doing It

Most of the groundwork was done in March… laying the rock base.

Now the blocks, made in Granadilla, are being transported and positioned along the breakwater.

And they’re doing a lot of it overnight… mainly to avoid disrupting ferries and daily activity.

Environmental Side of Things

There are a few restrictions in place too.

  • Anti-turbidity barriers to protect water quality
  • Limits on rock dumping between April and July (angel shark breeding season)

So it’s not just full speed ahead… there are a few boxes to tick.

The Cost

The project sits at around €5.3 million, with a big chunk coming from EU funding.

Final Thought

It’s not the most glamorous project… but it’s one of those that actually matters.

Stronger harbour means fewer problems when the weather turns… and less disruption for everyone relying on those ferry routes.
