Pancho Camurria Returns to Tenerife… And It’s About Time

After a bit of a gap… six years to be exact, the Pancho Camurria (the youth Lucha Canaria tournament) is back in Tenerife.

And not just anywhere… it’s heading to the north, which hasn’t hosted it in 15 years.

That alone tells you this one’s a bit special.

Back Where It Belongs

The tournament was officially presented at the Cabildo, and there’s a clear feeling behind it… this isn’t just another event.

It’s the 40th edition of one of the most respected competitions in lucha canaria. Proper grassroots stuff. The kind where future champions get spotted early.

This year, it runs from 17 to 19 April, split across:

  • Puerto de la Cruz (Santiago Yanes terrero)
  • Santa Úrsula (final on the Sunday)

Tenerife Defending at Home

Tenerife comes in as the current champion, which always adds a bit of pressure… and expectation.

They’ll be up against:

  • Gran Canaria
  • La Palma
  • El Hierro
  • Fuerteventura
  • Lanzarote

So it’s not exactly a quiet weekend.

Six island teams, split into groups, battling it out over three days… leading to the final on Sunday.

More Than Just a Tournament

There’s a reason this one still matters.

It’s not just about winning… it’s about what comes next.

A lot of the big names in lucha canaria have passed through this exact competition. It’s where things start getting serious.

And to be fair, there’s been a push lately to give the sport a bit more backing… more funding, more structure, even opening things up further with new categories.

About time, really.

A Good Excuse to Get Out

If you’ve never been to a live lucha event, this is a decent place to start.

You’ll get:

  • Atmosphere
  • Proper local tradition
  • And a crowd that actually cares about what they’re watching

No tourists pretending to understand it… just people who grew up with it.

Which makes a difference.
