Drivers using the TF-5 between Icod de los Vinos and El Tanque should be able to get back on the road this Friday evening, with the Tenerife Cabildo completing the final stages of a resurfacing project that has kept the route restricted for the past two weeks.
The work began on 30 August and has covered around 11 kilometres of road, with approximately 60,000 square metres of surface being treated.
The aim has been fairly straightforward: improve the condition of the road, give vehicles better grip and make the journey safer.
Almost 60,000 square metres of road
The first stage involved milling, rehabilitating and regularising the existing road surface.
This was followed by the application of a micro-asphalt layer around five millimetres thick, a treatment designed to restore the road’s properties, improve grip and extend the useful life of the surface.
There was, however, a slight complication.
The micro-asphalt needs to be applied correctly, which meant the road had to be closed during the day while that part of the work was carried out.
That has inevitably meant some disruption for people travelling between Icod and El Tanque.
Alternative routes have been in place
The Cabildo has used various traffic diversions during the works, with the TF-42 and TF-82 providing the main alternative routes.
Drivers will still need to use these routes until the TF-5 is reopened.
Island roads councillor Dámaso Arteaga said the work will significantly improve the quality and safety of the road surface.
He also thanked drivers and local residents for their patience while the work was underway.
The Cabildo expects the TF-5 to reopen to traffic on Friday night, bringing an end to two weeks of restrictions and roadworks on this important route between the north-western municipalities.
