One of the best ways to get to know Tenerife isn’t from a beach or a viewpoint. It’s from a table.
The island is packed with places where good food is simply part of everyday life. Fresh fish, family-run guachinches, local wines and traditional Canarian recipes all tell a story about the communities that produce them.
Now, National Geographic has highlighted Tajao, La Victoria de Acentejo and El Sauzal as three of the best villages in Tenerife for anyone looking to experience authentic local food.
Tajao for fresh fish and seafood
If you ask many Tenerife residents where to go for fresh fish, there’s a good chance they’ll point you towards San Miguel de Tajao.
This small fishing village on the south-east coast has built an excellent reputation thanks to its collection of seafood restaurants, many serving the day’s catch just a few metres from the Atlantic.
Don’t expect fine dining or fancy presentation. Tajao’s appeal is its simplicity.
Grilled fish, fresh seafood and sea views are the stars of the show, making it one of those places where the quality of the ingredients speaks for itself.
It’s easy to drive past on the TF-1 without giving it a second thought, but those who make the detour usually return.
La Victoria de Acentejo for guachinches and local wine
Head north and the scenery, and the menu, changes completely.
La Victoria de Acentejo is surrounded by vineyards and farmland, making it one of the best places to experience Tenerife’s traditional rural cuisine.
The village is well known for its guachinches, the informal family-run eateries where local wine is served alongside hearty homemade dishes.
Here you’ll find favourites such as:
- Goat meat.
- Escaldón de gofio.
- Ribs with corn on the cob.
- Local wines produced in the surrounding vineyards.
There’s nothing particularly fancy about a good guachinche, and that’s exactly why people love them. Generous portions, honest cooking and a relaxed atmosphere are all part of the experience.
El Sauzal combines food with spectacular views
The third recommendation is El Sauzal, one of the prettiest towns on Tenerife’s north coast.
Known for its panoramic views over the Atlantic, vineyards and banana plantations, El Sauzal offers a slightly different dining experience.
Its restaurants and traditional tascas combine classic Canarian cooking with more modern touches, making it a great choice whether you’re stopping for lunch after exploring the area or planning a leisurely evening meal.
The setting certainly helps too. Few places combine good food with scenery quite as effortlessly as El Sauzal.
Three villages, three very different flavours
What makes Tenerife’s food scene so enjoyable is how much it changes from one part of the island to another.
In Tajao, it’s all about the sea and freshly landed fish.
In La Victoria de Acentejo, it’s traditional country cooking, local wine and authentic guachinches.
In El Sauzal, you can enjoy classic Canarian dishes while taking in some of the island’s finest coastal views.
It’s a reminder that some of Tenerife’s best meals aren’t always found in the busiest tourist resorts. Sometimes the best approach is simply to visit a village, find a table where the locals are eating, and let the food do the talking.
