Fancy finishing the summer with music, food and a few mojitos?
Mojitos Vacilón Fest is taking over the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena in Santa Cruz de Tenerife this Saturday, 12 September, with a full day of live music, dancing, food and family-friendly activities.
The event runs from 12:00 to 23:00, turning the city centre into a little slice of summer and celebrating the long-standing links between the Canary Islands and Cuba.
What’s happening?
There’s something going on throughout the day, starting with dance activities from Aradance.
The programme includes:
- 12:10 – Barre with Aradance
- 12:30 – Children’s dance workshop and exhibition
- 13:00 – Vidance with Aradance
- 16:30 – Live music from Calle Obispo
- 18:00 – Vacilón with El Caracol
So, yes, you can turn up at lunchtime and potentially still be dancing several hours later. Your choice.
Plenty to eat
The gastronomic area will feature a selection of local and international food businesses, including Manglar Restaurante, Caña y Ron, Americo Truck, Ceviboom, Punt. en Boca, Doggy’s and Lucky Helado.
There’s also a market area featuring local businesses such as Alpargatas El Toscal, Palo Santo, Sal y Lava, Musgo Natural Deco, AMA Essentials and Epiphany.
So it isn’t just about eating and drinking. The organisers are also hoping to bring some extra footfall to businesses in the city centre.
A new addition to the calendar
The event was presented this week by Santa Cruz’s councillor for fiestas, Javier Caraballero, who described it as a different way of enjoying music, dancing and gastronomy in the heart of the city.
The District Centro councillor, Purificación Dávila, said the event would turn the Alameda into a space for meeting, socialising and enjoying the city.
There’s also support from FAUCA, with the organisation highlighting the opportunity for local businesses to benefit from the extra visitors.
The organisers expect between 3,500 and 5,000 people to attend, with additional temporary employment created around areas such as security, cleaning, technical services, event production and entertainment.
A bit of Caribbean sunshine in Santa Cruz
The idea behind Mojitos Vacilón Fest is fairly simple.
Take the relaxed feeling of a summer beach gathering, add music, food and a Caribbean influence, and stick it in the middle of Santa Cruz.
If the first edition goes well, the organisers hope it will become an annual fixture in the city’s events calendar.
And with the summer disappearing faster than a cold mojito on a hot afternoon, Saturday seems like a decent excuse to get out and enjoy it while we can.
