The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has officially named the municipal football ground in Las Delicias after Juan Pérez Fumero, recognising a man who dedicated much of his life to youth football and community sport in the municipality.
The facility will now be known as the Juan Pérez Fumero Municipal Football Ground, following unanimous approval by the City Council.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Grassroots Football
Juan Pérez Fumero served as president of Sociedad Deportiva San José for almost five decades and became one of the most respected figures in grassroots football across Tenerife and the Canary Islands.
His work helped generations of young players develop both on and off the pitch, promoting sport as a tool for education, inclusion and personal growth.
The official ceremony took place on Monday and was attended by local and island representatives, sporting figures, family members and residents.
Among those present were Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, Sports Councillor Alicia Cebrián, Ofra-Costa Sur District Councillor Santiago Díaz Mejías, Infrastructure Councillor Javier Rivero, Tenerife Sports Councillor Yolanda Moliné, and SD San José president Rosa Orán.
A Lasting Legacy
Speaking during the ceremony, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted Pérez Fumero’s contribution to both sport and community life.
He described him as someone who embodied the values of effort, dedication and commitment, adding that his influence extended far beyond football and left a lasting mark on countless families throughout Santa Cruz.
The mayor also noted that the unanimous support shown by councillors reflected the widespread respect and affection held for Pérez Fumero across the municipality.
More Than Just Football
Sports Councillor Alicia Cebrián praised his role in helping develop youth football in Tenerife and strengthening sporting opportunities within the Las Delicias neighbourhood.
She emphasised that Pérez Fumero always viewed sport as a vehicle for education, coexistence and integration, helping hundreds of young people find a positive environment in which to grow.
According to Cebrián, the decision to name the stadium after him reflects the appreciation of those who worked alongside him and ensures his contribution will remain linked to one of the area’s most important sporting facilities.
Keeping His Memory Alive
Through this tribute, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has chosen to permanently honour a man whose dedication, responsibility and service helped shape grassroots football for generations.
For many in Las Delicias and beyond, the new name is a fitting recognition of a lifetime spent supporting young athletes and strengthening community sport.
