Puerto de la Cruz Reopens Two Beaches After Pollution Closure

Playa Grande and Charcón in Playa Jardín have been closed to swimmers after water tests found elevated levels of E. coli.

The bathing areas at Playa Grande and Charcón in Playa Jardín, Puerto de la Cruz, have been temporarily closed after water samples showed excessive levels of Escherichia coli.

Testing carried out on 2 September found more than 800 colony-forming units per 100 millilitres (cfu/100 ml), above the acceptable limit of 500 cfu/100 ml.

A second analysis commissioned by Puerto de la Cruz Council from Biocontrol Labtec at Playa Charcón also recorded E. coli levels above 800 cfu/100 ml.

Although the results of the independent analysis had not yet been verified by the Tenerife Health Area, the Council decided to take precautionary action while further testing was carried out.

Monitoring the Water Quality

The local authorities are working with health officials to monitor the situation and determine when the beaches can safely reopen.

The Council says it will continue carrying out tests and will keep residents and visitors informed as more information becomes available.

The bathing areas will remain closed until further results confirm that the water quality has returned to acceptable levels.

For anyone planning a beach day in Puerto de la Cruz, it is worth checking the latest official information before heading down. Tenerife has plenty of beaches, so there is no need to take unnecessary chances with the water.
