More than 800 households in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are benefiting from one of the city’s largest residential renovation programmes in recent decades, with major improvements designed to reduce energy consumption, improve accessibility and modernise ageing apartment buildings.
The works, being carried out in the neighbourhoods of Añaza and Los Gladiolos, are funded through the European Union’s Next Generation programme and represent an investment of more than €20 million.
Hundreds of Homes Undergoing Renovation
The project covers 813 homes, including 521 properties in Añaza and 292 in Los Gladiolos.
Construction is already underway across all developments. While some buildings are expected to be completed this summer, others will continue through to the end of 2026 or early 2027.
The programme forms part of Spain’s Planned Residential Rehabilitation Environment (ERRP) initiative, which aims to improve housing quality while making residential buildings more energy efficient and accessible.
Energy Savings and Better Accessibility
The renovations go beyond external improvements and include upgrades that will have a direct impact on residents’ daily lives.
Among the key improvements are:
- Installation of new lifts in buildings that currently have none
- Replacement of outdated lifts
- Roof waterproofing and insulation
- Renovation of communal flooring
- Upgrades to water meter systems
- Installation of renewable energy systems, including solar panels to provide hot water
According to technical estimates, the improvements could reduce non-renewable energy consumption by up to 60%, helping households lower their electricity costs while reducing carbon emissions.
More Than €20 Million Investment
The largest part of the investment is focused on Añaza, where 381 homes across four residential developments are being upgraded at a cost of more than €10 million.
A further 140 homes in two additional Añaza developments are also being renovated through a separate project worth over €3 million.
In Los Gladiolos, 292 homes are undergoing improvements as part of a project valued at more than €7 million, modernising buildings that require significant upgrades in both accessibility and energy efficiency.
Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez said securing European funding had made it possible to carry out projects that would otherwise have been difficult to finance. Meanwhile, Municipal Housing Councillor Belén Mesa highlighted the importance of the programme in improving both the condition of the buildings and the quality of life of hundreds of local families.
