La Laguna has launched a new campaign designed to get people spending in local shops, restaurants and businesses, with 70,000 discount vouchers available to residents.
The scheme gets underway on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, with the aim of giving local families a bit of help with their spending while putting more money through the tills of businesses across the municipality.
A total of 283 businesses have signed up to take part.
Pay €10 and spend €20
The idea is fairly simple.
Each voucher has a value of €20, but residents pay just €10, with the La Laguna council covering the other €10.
That means residents can spend €100 while paying just €50, provided they use the vouchers at participating businesses.
The council’s contribution to the scheme is €700,000, while the wider campaign is valued at around €1.4 million in economic activity.
Commerce councillor Estefanía Díaz described the initiative as one of the most anticipated campaigns of the year, saying it is designed to provide a financial incentive for families while increasing visits to local businesses.
The intention is to make sure the money goes directly into the local economy rather than disappearing into one of those mysterious online shopping baskets we all seem to have these days.
Shops, restaurants and even tattoo studios
The participating businesses cover a broad range of sectors.
Residents can use the vouchers in small shops, restaurants and service businesses, giving people plenty of choice when deciding where to spend them.
There is also a new addition this year, with tattoo studios included in the campaign for the first time.
FAUCA president Abbas Moujir said similar voucher schemes have proved effective in encouraging people to shop locally, increasing sales and attracting new customers.
He also highlighted the longer-term benefit of reminding residents about the businesses available in their own neighbourhoods.
A chance to discover local businesses
For Iván Pérez, president of La Laguna Zona Comercial, the campaign is about more than simply offering a discount.
He believes it gives residents the opportunity to discover products and services they may not have used before and potentially develop longer-term relationships with local businesses.
And the timing is fairly handy.
The campaign coincides with the back-to-school period, when household expenses tend to creep up rather quickly. The vouchers can be used for everyday purchases, something a little less essential, or even some early Christmas shopping.
Yes, Christmas. It’s September. I know. Nobody is happy about it.
Supporting the local economy
The council is encouraging residents to take advantage of the vouchers while supporting the businesses taking part.
Díaz said the scheme should provide the perfect excuse to enjoy local businesses and the convenience and personal service they offer, while helping to protect employment and economic activity across La Laguna.
With 70,000 vouchers available and 283 participating businesses, the council is hoping the campaign will give the local commercial sector a useful boost at an important time of year.
