La Laguna Hosts a Street Battle of Rap, Poetry and Traditional Canarian Polkas

La Laguna is bringing traditional Canarian verse and modern urban music together for the second edition of Biblioteca Resonante on Friday 30 October.

The free cultural event will take place in Plaza Hermano Ramón, on Calle Viana, from 5.30pm, turning the public square into a stage for improvisation, rap and the quick-witted art of spoken verse.

Organised by La Laguna Municipal Library, the event forms part of the celebrations for Library Day and aims to bring the written and spoken word out into the streets.

When Traditional Verse Meets Rap

One of the main attractions will be a live improvisation battle bringing together two very different musical traditions.

Rappers Reina Omega and Cristina Mahelo will go head-to-head with repentistas Anamarys Gil and Tatazirga García, in a performance built around rhyme, quick thinking and the ability to respond on the spot.

Although the styles come from different backgrounds, both rely on the same skills: rhythm, wordplay and the ability to think quickly under pressure.

The programme will also feature a showcase of Canarian rap, with Jela, Ibra, Safiro and Ayo Lion performing alongside DJ Jim B.

Young Performers and Traditional Polkas

The afternoon begins at 5.30pm, with children from the Abubukaka school of verse improvisation introducing audiences to the traditional Canarian décima, a poetic form with deep roots in the islands.

At 6.30pm, the Batallita de polkas will continue the celebration of traditional wordplay, rhythm and popular culture.

The event is designed for all ages, giving younger performers a chance to share the stage with established artists while introducing audiences to both traditional and contemporary forms of expression.
