Anyone who has tried finding a parking space in El Médano during summer will know the struggle.
A quick trip to the beach can easily turn into twenty minutes of driving around in circles, hoping someone is about to leave.
That may soon become a little easier.
Granadilla de Abona Town Hall has officially awarded the contract for the construction of what will become Tenerife’s first modular multi-storey car park, bringing a long-awaited project one step closer to reality.
160 New Parking Spaces
The new facility will be built on Calle Tenerife, next to the football ground annexes, and will provide 160 parking spaces spread across two levels.
The design also includes a walkable rooftop deck, making efficient use of the available space while minimising the footprint of the development.
The project will occupy a site of approximately 2,155 square metres.
Investment of Nearly €3 Million
The modular car park represents an investment of more than €2.92 million.
According to the council, the development is intended to ease chronic parking shortages, improve traffic circulation and make access to El Médano easier for residents, visitors and local businesses.
Parking demand in the coastal town has grown steadily over recent years as El Médano has become one of Tenerife’s most popular destinations for both tourism and watersports.
A Project Years in the Making
Local residents, business owners and tourism operators have been calling for additional parking facilities for years.
The issue becomes particularly noticeable during weekends, holidays and the busy summer season, when finding a parking space can feel like a sport in itself.
Councillor for Public Works and Services, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, described the project as an important step towards improving mobility and creating a more organised transport system for the town.
He added that the new facility should help improve accessibility while supporting local economic activity.
Construction Expected Soon
Now that the contract has been awarded, the council will complete the remaining administrative procedures before construction begins.
The aim is to bring the new car park into operation as quickly as possible as part of a wider strategy to modernise public infrastructure across the municipality of Granadilla de Abona.
For residents, visitors and anyone who has spent a summer afternoon endlessly searching for a parking space near the beach, it will likely be one of the most welcome developments El Médano has seen in years.
