Bajamar to Serve One Tonne of Prawns at Popular Summer Food Festival

Seafood lovers are in for a treat this weekend as Bajamar, on Tenerife’s north coast, prepares to serve one tonne of prawns during the third edition of its popular Cañas & Camarones festival.

Taking place on Saturday 11th July from 12:00pm until 9:00pm around the Bajamar natural pools, the event combines fresh local seafood, live music and family entertainment in what has quickly become one of the highlights of Tenerife’s summer calendar.

Around 10,000 Free Prawn Tapas

Organisers expect the impressive one-tonne haul of prawns to produce around 10,000 tapas, giving visitors the chance to enjoy one of the Canary Islands’ most traditional seafood delicacies alongside a refreshing beer.

Originally created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Bajamar being declared a Tourist Destination of Interest, the festival has grown rapidly over the past three years and now attracts thousands of visitors from across the island.

Food, Music and Local Businesses

Alongside the seafood, visitors can enjoy:

  • Live performances from six musical acts throughout the day.
  • A local market featuring 13 independent brands.
  • Restaurants specialising in fresh seafood and Canarian cuisine.
  • Activities designed to showcase Bajamar’s coastal culture and local economy.

This year’s event has also moved from its usual September date to July, allowing organisers to coincide with the peak prawn fishing season and ensure the freshest possible produce.

Celebrating Tenerife’s Coastal Heritage

Local councillor Fran Hernández described the festival as an opportunity for people to discover Bajamar’s spectacular coastline while supporting local businesses, restaurants and fishermen.

Dimple Melwani, CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, highlighted how events like Cañas & Camarones help strengthen the local economy while promoting sustainable tourism.

Meanwhile, Esteban Reyes, Director General of Fisheries for the Canary Islands Government, said the humble prawn is much more than a popular food.

“It forms part of the identity of our coastline and represents the daily work of our fishing communities. Events like this help showcase that heritage while supporting the local fishing sector.”

With plenty of seafood, live entertainment and a stunning seaside setting, Cañas & Camarones looks set to be one of Tenerife’s tastiest events of the summer.
