Get the boots out.
The new hiking season at the Aula de la Naturaleza in Arona is getting underway, with five routes planned between October and December.
The walks take in some very different parts of Tenerife, combining landscapes, local history and a bit of exercise. And, importantly, there’s usually someone else around to complain about the hills with.
Five routes to explore
The programme includes:
1. Chinyero to Tamaimo
Entrance to Chinyero, Los Guirres Mountain, Arguayo and Tamaimo.
2. Tegueste route
La Quebrada, La Estercolada Trail, Zapata Lookout, El Juntadero, Los Dornajos Trail, La Orilla, El Sardán Trail and Tegueste.
3. El Río to Arico
Starting in El Río and finishing in Villa de Arico.
4. Fasnia to Güímar
A route between Fasnia and Güímar following the historic Royal Road of the South.
5. San José de Los Llanos to Garachico
San José de Los Llanos, Guirre Valley, Ruigómez, Casa Las Canales, San Juan del Reparo and Garachico.
More than just a walk
The routes are led by monitors who will explain the natural and ethnographic history of the areas along the way.
So you aren’t just walking through the landscape. You’ll also get some of the stories, history and little details that are easy to miss if you’re concentrating too hard on whether you’ve got another three kilometres of uphill to go.
How to sign up
Places are limited to 20 people per route, so booking ahead is important.
Registration is through Model 940, either:
- In person at the SAC, with a prior appointment via 010 or 922 761 600
- Through the Arona Town Hall electronic headquarters
The registration deadline is two weeks before each route.
The meeting point for the hikes is the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre at 08:00.
If you’ve been meaning to get out and explore a bit more of Tenerife this autumn, this looks like a good excuse to dust off the walking boots.
