Arafo is about to pay tribute to one of the voices that became part of the story of traditional Canarian music.
On 16 and 17 October, the municipality will host Dacio Ferrera, a special production celebrating the life, music and legacy of the singer, who was born in Arafo in 1938.
Ferrera’s career was closely linked to some of the best-known musical groups in the Canary Islands. He performed with the Orfeón La Paz, Agrupación Real Hespérides, Masa Coral Tinerfeña, Cuarteto Acaymo and, most notably, Los Sabandeños.
For several generations, his voice and distinctive way of interpreting traditional music became part of the musical memory of the Islands.
More than a tribute concert
The production is intended to be more than a straightforward concert.
The stage will bring together musicians and singers connected to Ferrera’s generation, his repertoire and the same tradition of passing Canarian music from one generation to the next.
Taking part will be Héctor González, Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao’, José Manuel Ramos, Fabiola Socas and Juan Carlos ‘El Palmero’, alongside members of Los Sabandeños and Atlantes.
Together, they will create a musical journey through Ferrera’s legacy and the traditional sounds that continue to have a place in Canarian culture.
It’s also a meeting between generations. Some of the performers share a direct connection with Ferrera and his era, while others represent the musicians keeping that tradition going today.
A voice remembered through other voices
The production has been designed to bring music and memory together, rather than simply reproduce songs associated with Ferrera.
The idea is to reflect a way of understanding traditional music as something shared. A means of bringing people together, passing knowledge on and maintaining a connection with where you come from.
The theatrical direction and dramaturgy by Oswaldo Bordón will shape the production, combining music and theatre to create an evocation of Ferrera through the artists who share part of his musical story.
And having performers from different generations on the same stage gives the evening another dimension. Ferrera’s career becomes the link between the musicians who knew that world and those continuing the tradition today.
Back where it all began
Holding the show in Arafo feels particularly appropriate.
This is where Dacio Ferrera was born and where his journey began before taking him to some of the most important musical formations in the Canary Islands.
Now his story is returning home, albeit through the voices of other performers.
It’s a fitting way to remember someone whose contribution became part of the musical heritage of the Islands, while also showing that traditional music doesn’t have to sit quietly in the past gathering dust.
It can still be performed, shared and passed on.
