Acerina Amador brings ‘Anacaona’ to the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, with the performance starting at 20:30.
The show takes its name from Anacaona, the Taíno princess who, according to the story behind the production, chose the gallows in 1503 rather than become the concubine of a Castilian conquistador.
Since then, her figure has become a symbol of resistance for Indigenous peoples and Caribbean women. Her story has also crossed borders, inspiring independence movements in the 19th century and giving her name to a famous all-female Cuban son orchestra.
A story of resistance
Acerina Amador and Fernando López use Anacaona’s story as a starting point to explore similar echoes in the Canary Islands, bringing attention to women whose stories have been erased from the islands’ history.
The performance draws a parallel between historical resistance to colonialism and the everyday ways people resist the obedience and discipline imposed by modern society.
Using humour, irony and a hybrid style, ‘Anacaona’ asks the audience to consider their own relationship with obedience and authority.
At the heart of the performance is a simple question:
How do we respond, and where do we stand, when we are expected to obey?
