Plans for the new Santa Catalina inclusive park in La Gallega have taken another step forward, with Santa Cruz Council awarding the construction contract to Probisa Vías y Obras SLU.
The contract is worth €3,480,125, excluding IGIC, which adds a further €243,608 to the bill.
The project will be funded over two financial years, with €1.14 million allocated for 2026 and around €2.58 million for 2027. The Cabildo is also contributing a subsidy of more than €1.2 million.
There is still a little paperwork to get through before work can begin. The other two companies that tendered for the contract have 15 working days from notification of the decision, during which a special procurement appeal can be lodged. Once that period has passed, the council can formally sign the contract.
Nearly 14,000 square metres of inclusive play space
The new park will cover 13,930 square metres, making it one of the largest accessible play areas in the Canary Islands.
The aim is to create a space where children with and without disabilities can use the same play facilities and enjoy them on equal terms.
Plans include accessible play equipment, pedestrian routes, rest areas and sensory play spaces. There will also be new street furniture, lighting, drainage, irrigation and sewerage infrastructure, along with a self-cleaning public toilet and improvements to the entrances.
Green space is also a big part of the project. Most of the existing vegetation will be retained, while additional planting will bring landscaped areas to almost 75% of the site. That should also mean more shade, which is never a bad thing in Tenerife.
The park sits between Avenida Cercado Corazón and the streets Camino Cruz de La Gallega, Mandrágora and Gran Duque.
A project residents have been asking for
The redevelopment follows years of requests from people living in the area.
Suggestions for improvements to Santa Catalina park were included in Santa Cruz’s 2023 participatory budget, with residents calling for better play areas, places to sit and enjoy a picnic, improved signage, sports facilities and services.
The council had previously expected construction to begin during the final quarter of 2026. The contract award is an important step towards getting the project moving, although the formal signing still needs to take place.
