La Laguna celebrates the main day of the Fiestas del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna 2026 today, Monday 14 September, with religious ceremonies, traditional processions, fireworks and a major traffic operation across the historic centre.
The day is the biggest event in the city’s annual festivities and attracts thousands of residents, devotees and visitors. There is plenty going on, but getting around by car will be a different matter…
A full day of religious ceremonies
The programme begins at 7:00am with church bells ringing across the municipality.
At 10:00am, the Civic-Military Procession carrying the Royal Standard leaves the Town Hall and heads towards La Laguna Cathedral.
A reception for the representative of the Spanish Royal Household takes place at 10:45am inside the cathedral. During the ceremony, Eladio Alexis Díaz, Major Brother of the Royal and Venerable Slavery, presents the Silver Staff.
Following the solemn Mass at 12:00pm, the Cristo de La Laguna returns to its Royal Sanctuary in the traditional Procesión del Retorno. The route passes through Plaza de Los Remedios and along Calle Juan de Vera, Calle San Agustín and Calle Viana.
Later in the afternoon, a sung religious service takes place at 7:00pm at the Sanctuary, performed by the Achamán group.
The Cristo then heads out once again for the traditional evening procession through the historic centre, before the main fireworks display of the day.
The Fuegos del Risco
The famous Fuegos del Risco are scheduled for 11:00pm.
It is one of those Tenerife events where you really do not want to be trying to find somewhere to park at the last minute. Thousands of people are expected in and around the historic centre, so public transport is likely to be the sensible option.
Traffic restrictions around La Laguna
The Ayuntamiento de La Laguna has introduced parking restrictions from 7:00am along the procession routes.
Several spaces are also reserved for official authorities, including areas around Plaza del Adelantado, Calle Santo Domingo and Calle Consistorio.
The taxi rank at Plaza del Adelantado is moved temporarily to Calle Santo Domingo until 4:00pm.
For the evening fireworks, parking is prohibited from 5:00pm along the TF-13 Vía de Ronda, Pista Militar de San Roque and Camino de Las Estaciones.
From 10:30pm until the fireworks have finished, the TF-13 will be completely closed in both directions between the Las Mercedes roundabout and the access to Calle Magistrado Campo Llarena.
Extra trams for the evening
Metrotenerife is increasing services on Tram Line 1 throughout the public holiday.
Trams will run approximately every six minutes during the morning, increasing to every seven minutes from 3:00pm.
After the fireworks, three additional tram units will be waiting at Trinidad station. They will be put into service as demand increases, operating towards Santa Cruz as spaces become available.
So, if you’re heading into La Laguna for the Cristo celebrations today, leave the car at home if you can. The fireworks are worth seeing. Sitting in traffic afterwards for an hour or two probably isn’t.
