El Médano’s Famous Wooden Seafront Walkway Nears Completion After Major Renovation

Anyone who’s walked along El Médano’s wooden promenade over the years will know it had started looking a bit tired.

Salt, sun, sand, sea air and thousands of people trampling across it daily tend to do that.

Now though, the long-running renovation project is finally entering its last phase.

Final Stage Begins Soon

Granadilla de Abona Town Hall has confirmed that the third and final section of the refurbishment is expected to begin within the next month, after officially signing off the first two completed phases this week.

The final stretch of works is expected to take around two months to complete.

More Than €700,000 Invested

The renovation project forms part of Spain’s Sustainable Tourism Plan and has already seen around:

💶 €525,000 invested in the first two phases
💶 An additional €172,000 allocated for the final section

The promenade was originally built back in 1992 and has spent decades battling constant exposure to Atlantic weather and heavy foot traffic from both locals and tourists.

The sea tends to win eventually.

What’s Being Improved?

The works include:

🪵 Replacement of damaged wooden decking
🪑 Improvements to street furniture
♿ Better accessibility
🚶 Increased pedestrian safety

The council also says more upgrades are planned later, including modernised beach shower facilities.

Some Disruption… But Most People Understand Why

As expected, the construction work has caused some inconvenience for businesses and residents nearby, especially in one of Tenerife’s busiest beach areas.

The council publicly thanked locals for their patience during the project.

Which is probably the polite version of saying everyone has spent months walking around barriers and construction tape trying not to step into wet concrete.

One of Tenerife’s Most Loved Coastal Areas

El Médano remains one of the island’s most popular seaside towns, particularly for:

🏄 Windsurfers
🪁 Kitesurfers
🌴 Visitors looking for a quieter beach atmosphere

Compared to some of the bigger southern resorts, it still manages to feel relatively relaxed.

Even when the wind is trying to remove your sunglasses.
