Tenerife Invests €7 Million to Strengthen Wildfire Prevention Ahead of Summer

After the devastating fires Tenerife has faced in recent years, the island is now significantly increasing its wildfire prevention and response systems before summer arrives again.

And honestly, most people here probably breathe a little easier hearing that.

€7 Million Approved for Fire Prevention and Response

The Cabildo de Tenerife has approved a major investment package worth:

💶 €7 million

Dedicated to:

  • Wildfire surveillance
  • Prevention measures
  • Firefighting operations
  • Emergency coordination systems

The funding will be spread across two years:

📅 €3.2 million in 2026
📅 €3.6 million in 2027

The programme will initially run for:

🕒 24 months

With the possibility of extending it for another two years afterwards.

Preparing for Another Difficult Summer

Cabildo president Rosa Dávila explained that the objective is to reinforce Tenerife’s capacity to deal with forest fires before the hottest months arrive.

The plan focuses on improving:

🔥 Rapid emergency response
🚒 Fire extinction operations
👨‍🚒 Coordination between emergency teams
🌲 Protection of natural areas

Because sadly, large summer fires are no longer viewed as rare events in Tenerife.

They’ve become a very real concern every year.

Smart Sensors and Real-Time Monitoring Across the Island

One of the most significant additions is the creation of a new intelligent monitoring system across Tenerife.

The Cabildo has approved:

📡 Up to 70 smart environmental sensors

With a separate investment of:

💶 €1.3 million

The system will use:

📷 Cameras
📡 Connected sensors
🌐 Internet-based monitoring technology

To detect risks in real time, including:

  • Wildfires
  • Flooding
  • Environmental incidents
  • Dangerous conditions in natural areas

94% Coverage of Tenerife Planned

According to the Cabildo, the sensor network is expected to cover:

📍 94% of Tenerife’s territory

Allowing emergency teams to react faster and make decisions using live environmental data.

Which sounds far more reassuring than waiting for someone to spot smoke from a mountain road half an hour later.

More Firefighters and Specialist Teams

The summer campaign will also include:

👨‍🚒 Specialised wildfire crews
🧑‍💻 Technical support teams
🚨 Integrated prevention and coordination systems

All designed to improve response times during emergencies.

The Cabildo says the approach aims to create a more efficient and coordinated system across the island.

Sustainability Also Plays a Role

Alongside emergency planning, the project will also prioritise:

♻️ Recycled materials
🌱 Sustainable resource management
🌍 Environmentally responsible procedures

Part of a wider push towards creating systems that are both effective and environmentally sustainable.

Tenerife’s Forests Remain One of Its Greatest Assets

Tenerife’s forests and natural landscapes are one of the island’s greatest treasures.

But after the fires of recent summers, people are increasingly aware of how quickly conditions can change when heat, wind and dry terrain combine.

Hopefully this summer the new systems spend more time on standby than in action.
