That’s not a small increase…
The Cabildo has approved a new road management contract worth over €11 million, more than tripling the previous agreement.
What the Contract Covers
The deal focuses on:
- The Road Information Centre (CIC)
- Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
- Monitoring Tenerife’s road network in real time
Including tunnels and some of the island’s busiest routes.
One Big Change
The old analogue camera system is finally being replaced.
Everything moves to digital surveillance, covering:
- Tunnels
- Main roads
- Over 1,200km of road network
Which honestly feels overdue.
The Companies Involved
The contract was awarded to a consortium made up of:
- Electronic Trafic
- Señalizaciones Villar
- Tunelia Ingenieros
After competing against six bidders.
Extra Upgrades Added
The winning proposal also included additional improvements worth around €571,000, including:
- Thermal cameras in several tunnels
- Better traffic monitoring systems
- Radio communication upgrades
- Integration of external traffic cameras
- Online SCADA visualisation systems
A lot of technical language… but essentially more connected traffic control.
Environmental Measures Too
The Cabildo says the contract also includes:
🚗 Zero-emission vehicles
🛠️ New maintenance equipment
👷 More specialised technical staff
To improve response times and system reliability.
The Cost Breakdown
The spending stretches until 2029:
- €1.86m in 2026
- €3.72m in 2027
- €3.72m in 2028
- €1.86m in 2029
Worth Knowing
Tenerife’s traffic problems aren’t exactly a secret…
So the Cabildo clearly sees this as a long-term investment in road management and mobility.
Whether drivers actually notice the difference day to day…
That’s the real test.
