There are plenty of places in Tenerife where you can get a decent plate of food.
Then there are the places where you leave thinking, we’ll be coming back here.
Guachinche El Fogón in Los Baldíos, La Laguna, is one of those places.
It’s built around the sort of food Tenerife does particularly well. Homemade Canarian dishes, grilled meat, generous portions and sensible prices. Nothing too clever. Just good food.
Traditional Tenerife food with plenty of choice
The menu covers a good selection of traditional dishes, with a few interesting twists along the way.
You’ll find ropa vieja de pulpo, costillas con piña y papas, garbanzas and the ever-popular escaldón.
If you’re more of a fish person, there’s also bacalao encebollado, which is another classic that doesn’t need much introduction.
And then there’s the meat.
Come hungry
Grilled meat is one of El Fogón’s specialities, with chicken, bichillo and secreto ibérico among the options.
It’s the sort of place where ordering a little too much food is an easy mistake to make. Not necessarily a bad one, though.
The restaurant also has an outdoor terrace and private parking, which is always useful in Tenerife. Finding somewhere decent to eat is one thing. Finding somewhere to leave the car without performing three laps of the neighbourhood is another.
Don’t skip dessert
There’s plenty to tempt you after the main course as well.
The homemade desserts include tarta de la abuela, quesillo and mousse de gofio.
The gofio mousse in particular is a nice way to finish a meal that’s been firmly rooted in local flavours from the start.
Where is Guachinche El Fogón?
You’ll find Guachinche El Fogón on Camino del Medio in Los Baldíos, close to Tenerife North Airport.
It currently has a 4.3-star rating on Google, suggesting plenty of people have left happy and, presumably, reasonably well fed.
Opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 12:00 to 17:00 and 20:00 to 23:00.
From Friday to Sunday, it’s open continuously from 12:00 to 23:00.
If you’re looking for traditional Canarian food without all the fuss, El Fogón looks like a good one to add to the list.
