Casa Olegario in Candelaria has become something of a local institution, serving fresh fish, seafood and traditional dishes just metres from the sea
There are restaurants in Tenerife that don’t really need much advertising. People simply keep going back.
Casa Olegario in Candelaria is one of them.
The restaurant has been serving fresh fish and seafood for more than 40 years, building a reputation as one of those proper old-school places where the food does the talking.
Food creators @guachinchesmodernos recently visited and described it as one of Candelaria’s most iconic restaurants, the sort of place that stays busy through word of mouth alone.
And there is one dish in particular that gets plenty of attention.
The famous ‘Submarino’
Casa Olegario’s signature dish is the Submarino, a huge platter packed with seafood and different products from the sea.
The large version costs €60, while a smaller option is available for €43.
Depending on the day’s selection, the platter can include prawns, mussels, limpets, squid, octopus and other seafood.
It is designed for sharing, and the food creators reckon one of the platters can feed four or five people.
Their verdict?
“Una brutalidad.”
Hard to argue with that.
Fresh fish with a sea view
The Submarino might be the dish that gets people talking, but the menu is firmly focused on fish and seafood.
Other options include fish soup and octopus and prawn salpicón, alongside other traditional seafood dishes.
The quality of the produce is one of the restaurant’s main attractions, but the location certainly helps too.
You can enjoy your lunch practically on the seafront in Candelaria, which is not a bad setting for a plate of fresh fish.
After more than four decades, Casa Olegario has managed to keep doing what these traditional restaurants do best: good produce, straightforward cooking and plenty of it.
