The Cabildo de Tenerife has approved the renaming of the main symphony hall at the Auditorio de Tenerife…
And this time it’s not for a sponsor, politician or telecoms company.
Thankfully.
A Tribute to One of Tenerife’s Great Voices
The venue will officially become:
🎼 Sala Sinfónica María Orán
In recognition of the late Tenerife soprano María Orán, one of the Canary Islands’ most respected classical performers.
Born in Santa Cruz in 1943, María Orán went on to build an international career performing on some of the world’s major stages before returning to Tenerife later in life.
More Than an International Performer
Beyond her career as a soprano, María Orán also became hugely influential in music education across the islands.
She served as:
🎓 Professor of Singing at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias
Helping train generations of young singers and musicians in the Canary Islands.
Which is probably why so many people in Tenerife’s music world still speak about her with enormous respect.
An Honour Without Politics or Sponsorship
The decision was approved by the Cabildo following a proposal from Auditorio de Tenerife and the island’s Culture Department.
Importantly…
The naming is entirely honorary and carries no commercial or financial component.
Just recognition for cultural contribution.
Simple enough.
A Long Cultural Legacy
Throughout her career, María Orán received several important distinctions including:
🏅 Tenerife Gold Medal in 1994
Her name also remains linked to the promotion of classical music through the CajaCanarias Music Prize.
Worth Knowing
For many people, the Auditorio de Tenerife is already one of the island’s most recognisable buildings.
Now its main hall will also carry the name of someone who helped shape Tenerife’s musical identity for decades.
Which feels quite fitting really.
