There’s a national sandwich competition underway… and Tenerife is very much in the mix.
Six places on the island are competing in the Best Sandwich in Spain 2026, each putting forward their own take using local flavours and ingredients.
Some of them… not exactly light.
The Tenerife Contenders
Here’s who’s representing the island:
- Bar Los Teques – “El Guanche Supremo”
Shredded goat meat in sauce with melted cured goat cheese - Bocatería 992 – “El Baifo”
Goat meat, cheese, fig jam, and corn crumble - Cafetería Los Majuelos – “Origen”
Pickled chicken, Flor cheese, rocket, pepper jam, and aioli - Panini’s – “Esencia Canaria”
Pork loin, mojo rojo, smoked cheese, apple, raisins, and honey - La Candela – “La Colmena”
Chicken with honey mustard, gouda, lettuce, and tomato - La Fosforera – “El Picarón”
Black pig, mojo palmero, smoked cheese, and house sauce
So yes… plenty of meat, plenty of cheese, and nothing particularly subtle.
How It Works
The competition runs from 1st to 26th April, with both the public and a professional jury having a say.
You can vote online, and they’re looking at things like:
- Bread quality
- Ingredient combinations
- Presentation
- Overall flavour
There’s also a final blind tasting on 5th May, where the overall winner gets decided.
Worth Trying?
If you like a good bocadillo, this is basically a ready-made food tour.
Six different spots, all trying to outdo each other… which usually works out quite well for everyone else.
And let’s be honest, anything involving goat meat, mojo, and melted cheese was never going to be boring.
