Tacoronte is bringing sustainability closer to home with the return of ECOFEST, a festival celebrating environmental awareness, local businesses and community involvement.
The second edition of ECOFEST Tacoronte will take place on Saturday 24 October, from 11am to 6pm, at Mercado Municipal La Estación.
The event was presented by Tacoronte mayor Sandra Izquierdo, local development councillor Eduardo Dávila and ECOFEST representative Susi García.
The market will become a meeting point for residents, families, businesses, community groups and visitors, with practical activities focused on responsible consumption, recycling and reusing resources, environmental education and protecting the local environment.
Izquierdo said the festival was an opportunity to show how sustainability starts with everyday decisions and the way people interact with their surroundings.
The council wants to encourage greater environmental awareness while supporting local economic development and involving residents in building a more sustainable future for Tacoronte.
Workshops, Local Food and Practical Ideas
The programme will include eco-workshops, practical demonstrations, short environmental talks known as Píldoras Verdes, a discussion panel and activities for families.
Local food will also feature prominently, highlighting the connection between sustainability, locally produced goods and the businesses that help keep the area’s economy ticking over.
Dávila said the aim was to make sustainability practical, accessible and interesting, while showcasing initiatives already taking place in Tacoronte and encouraging people to share ideas and experiences.
He also pointed out that sustainability is about more than protecting the environment. Supporting small businesses, encouraging responsible shopping and creating opportunities for local companies are all part of the picture.
The festival is organised through Tacoronte Council’s Employment and Local Development Agency and forms part of its Tacoronte Más Sostenible strategy, a roadmap towards 2030 built around nine challenges and 33 priorities.
García said visitors would be able to discover projects committed to sustainability and pick up useful ideas for making small changes to their daily habits.
New Awards for Sustainable Initiatives
One of the main additions this year is the launch of the Tacoronte Más Sostenible 2026 Awards, which will be presented during the festival’s closing ceremony.
The awards aim to recognise individuals, businesses, schools and community groups making a positive contribution to sustainability and environmental protection in the municipality.
There are five categories:
- Sustainable Business
- Territory and Local Produce
- Environmental Education and Awareness
- Sustainable Community
- Tacoronte Más Sostenible Honorary Award
The recognised initiatives will be included in a municipal database of sustainability best practices, allowing successful ideas to be shared and potentially adopted elsewhere.
Dávila said the awards would give visibility to people and organisations already working towards a more sustainable future for Tacoronte.
The festival forms part of the council’s wider effort to bring the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda into local life, encouraging cooperation between residents, businesses, schools and community organisations.
Everyone is invited to head along on Saturday for a day of practical ideas, local food, environmental activities and a chance to see what is happening in the area.
