With the Teatro Guimerá set for renovation, Santa Cruz has been looking for somewhere to keep performances going in the meantime.
The answer seems to be La Recova.
Or more specifically… Espacio R at the La Recova Art Centre, which is now set for a major transformation into a fully functioning performance venue.
The project comes with a budget of almost €1 million.
What’s Planned?
The city wants to turn the current space into a proper theatre-style venue with:
• Retractable seating
• Stage areas
• Professional lighting systems
• Scenic curtains
• Structural support for productions and backdrops
Basically taking it from cultural hall… to actual performance space.
The Investment
The Autonomous Organisation of Culture (OAC) has launched the tender process with a total investment of:
€988,502
The works are divided into five sections:
• Retractable grandstand seating – €463,310
• Stage flooring – €144,985
• Lighting truss structures – €135,500
• Scenic curtain system – €44,993
• LED lighting installation – €275,674
The seating alone takes nearly half the budget.
Which feels about right if you’ve ever priced theatre seating.
Four-Month Build Timeline
The expected execution period is:
4 months
Companies can still score extra points in the tender process if they offer quicker delivery times.
Applications remain open until:
23 June 2026
Keeping Culture Moving While Guimerá Closes
The idea is simple enough.
Keep performances alive while Teatro Guimerá undergoes renovation works.
And instead of finding a temporary room and making do… Santa Cruz is creating something that could remain useful long after the theatre reopens.
Not a bad move really.
La Recova already sits in the middle of the city.
Now it may end up becoming a proper stage instead of just somewhere people walk through on the way to somewhere else.
