Santa Cruz Carnival Breaks Participation Record as 109 Groups Sign Up for 2027

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is already making headlines months before it begins.

Organisers have confirmed that a record 109 groups have registered to take part in the 2027 Carnival, making it the largest level of participation in the event’s history.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme “Eternal Rome: The Empire of Carnival”, promising another colourful spectacle in what is already one of the world’s most famous carnival celebrations.

More Groups Than Ever Before

Registration has now closed, with three more groups signing up than for the 2026 edition.

Among the entries are:

  • 27 adult murgas
  • 19 children’s murgas
  • 8 rondallas
  • 10 musical groups
  • 6 senior groups
  • 2 children’s comparsas
  • 11 adult comparsas

There is also one children’s musical group taking part outside the competition.

Some categories have attracted more entries than the competition rules currently allow, meaning organisers will now decide the final line-up using the established selection criteria.

Strong Interest Across Every Category

The popularity of the Carnival continues to grow.

The choreography competition has also proved highly competitive, with 23 groups applying for just 20 available places.

The council has also confirmed that several new groups will make their debut in the adult murga and musical categories, adding fresh faces to one of Tenerife’s biggest annual events.

More Competitions Still to Open

While registrations for the main performance groups have now closed, applications for several other Carnival events will open in the coming weeks.

These include:

  • The Carnival Song Contest
  • Fancy Dress Competition
  • Floats
  • Decorated Vehicles

These events will complete the programme for what is expected to be another huge edition of the Santa Cruz Carnival.

Building Towards Another Spectacular Carnival

Often described as the second-largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro, Santa Cruz continues to attract performers from across Tenerife and beyond.

With record participation already confirmed, the 2027 Carnival looks set to be one of the biggest and most vibrant editions the city has ever hosted.
