The climbing wall at La Vega Park in La Laguna will remain free, public and open for unrestricted use, following a change of approach by the local council.
Last year, the municipal government announced plans to maintain free access to the facility while introducing controls to prevent inexperienced users from climbing without the necessary knowledge or equipment. Several options were considered, including the installation of a smart access system with electronic entry controls.
Free Access Remains for Now
Six months later, the council has decided to keep the climbing wall accessible to the public during the park’s normal opening hours.
Access will only be restricted when the Municipal Climbing School is using the facility for training sessions, ensuring classes can be conducted safely and without interruption.
According to the Sports Department, different management models have been studied in an effort to balance public access with user safety. These include intelligent access systems and digital registration technologies, although these options are still being evaluated.
Focus on Personal Responsibility
For the time being, the council has chosen to rely on a specific set of usage and safety guidelines while encouraging climbers to take personal responsibility.
Officials note that climbing is a sport that requires appropriate knowledge, experience and equipment, and users are expected to follow the safety recommendations provided at the facility.
Further Improvements Planned
Work to upgrade the climbing wall is still ongoing. The council previously invested more than €30,000 in repairs, including the replacement of climbing holds and improvements to training areas.
A more extensive inspection is now planned, and the facility is scheduled to close temporarily from 1st August so that technicians can carry out a full review of the structure, panels, climbing holds and anchor points.
The decision means climbers can continue enjoying one of Tenerife’s most popular outdoor climbing facilities free of charge while the council explores longer-term management solutions.
