Kim Simmons is bringing her musical project Free to the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on Thursday 24 September at 20:00.
The concert forms part of the Efecto Laguna series, organised by the Autonomous Organisation of Musical Activities (OAAM), which gives local and regional artists a platform to showcase their work.
Soul, blues and funk
Originally from Honduras and now based in Tenerife, Simmons mixes soul, blues and funk, reworking music from the 1950s through to the 1980s with a more contemporary sound.
For this performance, she is aiming for something more intimate than your average concert. The idea is to give just as much importance to emotion, lyrics and even silence as to the music itself.
She will be joined by a band featuring Ramón Castrillo on bass, Michael Afonso on guitar and Kiko Castro on drums.
The set will include songs from her album Free, which explores themes of freedom, transformation and rebuilding your life.
More than just a concert
The performance is connected to Simmons’ wider audiovisual project, Free – Salir es posible.
The project tells part of her personal journey and how artistic creation helped her move beyond a history of domestic violence.
That gives the concert another layer beyond the music itself, turning Free into a story about finding a way forward through creativity.
The performance is part of La Laguna’s wider cultural programme, which continues to bring different musical projects and artists to the city.
