Not something you see every day…
Public housing projects have been pretty thin on the ground.
The Plan
The council in Icod de los Vinos is moving ahead with:
- 17 public housing units
- On a 1,800m² municipal plot
- Near Cecilio Montes, close to the cemetery and senior centre
What Happens First
Before anything gets built, they need to prep the land.
- Budget: €400,000+
- Timeline: 5 months
- Tenders open until May 20
This covers basics like:
- Utilities
- Lighting
- Access
Then What?
Once that’s done…
The land gets handed over to the Cabildo, who will handle construction through the Activa Suelo programme.
A Bigger Picture
This isn’t just a one-off.
- First project like this in 20 years
- Part of a wider plan for 75 public homes
- Including unfinished housing in Santa Bárbara
The Catch
The council doesn’t actually have full powers to build housing themselves…
So their role is mainly to:
- Provide land
- Push projects forward
- Work with other institutions
Which is fairly typical.
Worth Knowing
There’s also infrastructure work involved:
- New access road
- Adjustments to water supply
- Ground prep due to volcanic terrain
So it’s not just building homes… it’s building everything around them too.
