Holy Week has started in La Laguna, and as always, it begins with the procession of the Santísimo Cristo del Rescate.
It sets off from the parish of La Concepción, which, if you’ve ever been, you’ll know is about as fitting a starting point as you can get. Proper setting, proper atmosphere.
This is the first procession of Semana Santa 2026 in the city, so it tends to draw a decent crowd… locals, visitors, and a fair few people who come back every year out of habit more than anything else.
There’s something about these processions that’s hard to explain if you haven’t seen one. Slow, quiet in parts, then suddenly full of sound… and it all just works.
No rush, no noise for the sake of it… just tradition being carried on.
If you’re on the island over the next week or so, it’s worth seeing at least one. Doesn’t have to be this one, but this is where it all starts.
