Figs might not be the first thing you think of when choosing a café, but one little spot in Tenerife is making them the star of the show.
Cafetería Higos de Fasnia has built its menu around figs grown in Fasnia, offering everything from sandwiches and juices to a rather unusual fig coffee.
Food creators @guachinchesmodernos recently visited the café and shared their experience online, highlighting some of the more unusual combinations on offer.
Their verdict? If you fancy trying something a little different, this place deserves a look.
Sandwiches with a figgy twist
The pair started with the La Inés sandwich, which combines goat’s cheese, rocket and palm honey. A straightforward combination, perhaps, but one that works particularly well if you’re partial to a bit of goat’s cheese.
They also tried a sandwich made with black Canarian pork, bacon and fig jam. The mix of savoury meat and sweet fig jam caught their attention, with Jonay describing it as something quite different.
There’s also fig juice on the menu, which came as a surprise to the visitors. They said they hadn’t come across another place offering fig juices or smoothies before.
Fig coffee is the unusual one
The sandwiches are one thing, but the café’s most distinctive offering might be its fig coffee.
The food creators admitted they had never heard of it before. According to the café, it is the only producer of fig coffee in Europe.
You can also buy fig-based products to take home, including baskets of figs and a range of other preparations made from the fruit. So if you discover a new favourite, you don’t have to leave it behind.
