Loro Parque Receives International Recognition for Animal Welfare Standards

Loro Parque in Tenerife has once again received international recognition for its animal care standards, retaining its certification from Global Humane, the international arm of the American Humane Society.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, with the organisation praising the park for its continued commitment to animal welfare.

Certification Retained After Independent Assessment

Dr Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of Global Humane, said the organisation was proud to recognise Loro Parque as a leader in animal welfare.

She added that maintaining the certification reflected the park’s ongoing efforts to prioritise the well-being of the animals in its care, while encouraging other zoos, aquariums and conservation centres to raise their own standards.

Loro Parque first achieved Global Humane certification in 2017, becoming the first zoo in Europe to receive the accreditation. It has maintained that status ever since.

Park founder and president Wolfgang Kiessling said retaining the certification nearly a decade later was a source of pride, adding that it confirmed the principles behind the park’s work were reflected in its daily care for the animals.

What Does the Certification Involve?

Keeping the certification requires more than filling in a few forms. Loro Parque underwent a detailed independent assessment covering a range of animal welfare requirements.

The process includes an application before the audit, followed by an on-site inspection examining factors such as:

  • Animal housing and living conditions
  • Nutrition and water quality
  • Lighting
  • Staff training
  • Species-specific welfare requirements

The assessment draws on scientific research and established best practices, with input from veterinarians and animal welfare specialists.

Global Humane says its certification programme uses science-based criteria reviewed by an independent Scientific Advisory Committee made up of experts in animal science, behaviour and ethics.

The aim is to provide visitors with independent assurance that certified facilities meet defined animal welfare standards.

Loro Parque’s renewed accreditation marks another milestone for the Tenerife attraction, which has held the certification since 2017.
