Welysis Industries is set to more than double the size of its facilities at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, following approval to expand its manufacturing site in the port’s Fishing Dock area.
The Port Authority’s Board of Directors approved the extension on 6 October, with the decision published in Spain’s Official State Bulletin on 9 October.
The expansion will increase the area occupied by the company from 4,569.20 square metres to 9,872.99 square metres. That’s a substantial increase in space for a business looking to boost its manufacturing capacity.
More room for manufacturing and exports
The approved extension follows a request submitted last summer for an additional 5,303.79 square metres.
The company plans to use the extra space to develop several facilities for manufacturing electrolysis plants, with equipment intended for export to European and African markets.
The revised agreement also allows for a 203.64% increase in built-up area.
Welysis originally received approval for the project in November 2021, when it was granted a 20-year lease on land within the port’s Free Zone.
What does Welysis manufacture?
Welysis Industries produces modular systems that generate chemicals used in water treatment and disinfection.
Its technology can produce sodium hypochlorite, used to disinfect water and help make it safe for drinking, as well as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.
The idea is to manufacture these chemicals on-site rather than rely on transporting them from elsewhere. That can be particularly useful in locations where moving chemicals is difficult or expensive.
The original project also included plans for a remote customer support centre, operator training facilities and research and development activities.
A boost for Tenerife’s industrial activity
The expansion gives Welysis more room to increase production and supports the port’s role in industrial and export-related activity.
While the approval is an important step, the announcement does not specify when the expanded facilities will be completed or begin operating.
