Santa Cruz Welcomes Europe’s Top Triathletes for Bank Holiday Weekend

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is hosting some of Europe’s leading triathletes this weekend, with the European Triathlon Cup bringing international competition to the capital on Sunday, 11 October.

The elite races are the main attraction in a packed weekend of sporting events, with athletes taking on a sprint-distance course through the city.

The women’s race starts at 11:30am, followed by the men’s event at 1:30pm.

Swim, bike, run

The athletes will face three disciplines in quick succession:

  • 750-metre swim
  • 20-kilometre cycle
  • 5-kilometre run

It’s a short, sharp format that leaves little room for mistakes. Spectators will have the chance to watch top-level European athletes compete right here in Tenerife, rather than having to switch on the television and hope someone remembers to show it.

More than just the elite races

The action starts on Saturday, with regional championships and paratriathlon events among the scheduled competitions.

There will also be opportunities for amateur athletes to take part, making the weekend about more than just the professionals.

The European Cup adds another international sporting event to Santa Cruz’s calendar and should bring plenty of activity to the city over the long weekend.

With Spain’s National Day falling on Monday, 12 October, it’s also a busy period for residents and visitors travelling around the islands.
