The week-long celebration returns from 23 to 30 August, bringing Bavarian music, food and plenty of beer to Puerto de la Cruz
There are some events in Tenerife that have been around for so long they’ve practically become part of the furniture.
The Oktoberfest Puerto de la Cruz, also known as the Bavarian Week, is one of them. Now in its 53rd edition, the festival has been bringing a bit of Bavaria to the north of Tenerife for more than 50 years.
This year’s celebrations run from 23 to 30 August, with the main Oktoberfest taking place at the Explanada del Muelle from 28 to 30 August.
And yes, there will be beer.
A Bavarian tradition in Tenerife
The event was officially presented by the Centro de Iniciativas y Turismo (CIT) de Puerto de la Cruz, with representatives from the local council, tourism sector and local businesses joining the presentation.
The festival has become an unusual but well-established meeting point between German and Canarian culture, combining music, food, traditions and tourism.
This year, the programme will extend beyond the main festival area, with events taking place across Puerto de la Cruz.
A concert at Lago Martiánez on 23 August will get things underway, followed by concerts, parades and traditional activities around the city.
Three days of Oktoberfest
The main event at the Explanada del Muelle runs from 28 to 30 August, with live music, German food and activities suitable for all ages.
One new addition this year is Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier, a beer from Munich that adds a suitably authentic Bavarian touch to the celebrations.
Because apparently Tenerife wasn’t already warm enough.
Dogtoberfest returns
One of the more unusual parts of the programme is back on 30 August, when Dogtoberfest gives visitors the chance to enjoy the celebrations with their four-legged companions.
There will be shaded areas and water stations for dogs, making it a more family-friendly way to join in without leaving the dog at home wondering where you’ve gone.
More than just a beer festival
The CIT and local authorities have highlighted the importance of keeping the event closely connected to local businesses and organisations.
After more than five decades, the Bavarian Week has become part of the identity of Puerto de la Cruz and continues to attract both residents and visitors.
The 53rd Oktoberfest Puerto de la Cruz runs from 23 to 30 August, with the main celebrations on 28, 29 and 30 August at the Explanada del Muelle.
Admission is free.
