A major new community sports and leisure hub is taking shape in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Work has now begun on what will become the capital’s first large-scale multi-sports complex, transforming an area in the Juan XXIII neighbourhood into a modern space designed for sport, recreation and community events.
With an investment of €2.7 million, the project is expected to be completed by mid-2027.
A space designed for everyone
The new complex will sit alongside Avenida de Los Príncipes de España and will bring together a wide range of facilities in one location.
Plans include a covered five-a-side football and multi-sports court, a skate park, calisthenics area, children’s playground with shaded zones, dog park, Canarian bowls courts, landscaped gardens, seating areas and a dedicated space for neighbourhood events.
Rather than focusing on just one activity, the aim is to create a place where people of all ages can spend time together.
Investing in local neighbourhoods
Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez said the project reflects the council’s vision of creating spaces that improve everyday life for residents.
As well as adding new sporting facilities, the development is intended to become a meeting place where families can relax, children can play and neighbours can enjoy a safer, more attractive public space.
It’s the sort of investment that often makes the biggest difference, not because it’s aimed at tourists, but because it improves life for the people who live there all year round.
Modern, accessible and greener
The design also places a strong emphasis on accessibility and sustainability.
New trees, landscaped gardens and improved public spaces will help soften the area, while the layout has been planned to make it accessible for everyone.
Council officials say the project has been carefully designed to make the most of what was previously a difficult site, creating a modern and practical facility that meets the needs of today’s residents.
More than just a sports facility
While the sporting facilities will no doubt attract plenty of attention, the wider goal is to create a genuine community hub.
From children learning to ride skateboards to neighbours attending local events or simply walking the dog, the development is intended to become a focal point for the Juan XXIII neighbourhood.
It’s another example of how Santa Cruz continues to invest in improving public spaces, creating places that benefit residents long after the construction crews have packed up and gone.
