Tenerife Pizzeria Creates Limited Edition Pizza Inspired by the Virgin of Candelaria

You don’t often see a pizza inspired by one of Tenerife’s most famous landmarks.

But that’s exactly what Pizzeria La Barchetta in Candelaria has done with its latest creation, a limited edition pizza called La Patrona, paying tribute to the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands.

Available only until 16th August, it’s a pizza that’s attracting attention not just for its ingredients, but for its rather unusual appearance.

A blend of Canarian and Italian flavours

La Patrona combines local Canarian produce with classic Italian ingredients.

The pizza starts with a base of almogrote, the famous cheese spread from La Gomera, alongside traditional Italian mozzarella.

It’s then topped with:

  • Rocket
  • Italian capocollo
  • Smoked cheese
  • A drizzle of Canarian palm honey

The sweet palm honey contrasts surprisingly well with the rich, salty almogrote, creating a combination that’s a little different from your average pizza.

Inspired by the Basilica of Candelaria

What really makes La Patrona stand out is its design.

Instead of looking like a traditional pizza, it features a raised focaccia-style dome that has been created to resemble the Basilica of Candelaria, one of Tenerife’s most recognisable religious landmarks.

A small bread cross sits on top, completing the tribute.

It’s certainly one of the more creative pizzas you’ll find on the island, and a nice example of how food can tell a local story as well as fill you up.

Only available for a limited time

If you’d like to try it, you’ll need to be fairly quick.

La Patrona is only available until 16th August at Pizzeria La Barchetta, located in Plaza de La Patrona, 14, Candelaria.

The restaurant already enjoys an excellent reputation, holding a 4.5-star rating on Google, and this limited edition creation is likely to attract plenty of curious visitors over the coming weeks.

Whether you’re making a day trip to Candelaria or simply looking for somewhere a little different to eat, this is certainly one of Tenerife’s more unusual culinary creations.
