The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) has awarded a contract worth €1,097,245 for the drafting of the long-awaited expansion and refurbishment project at Tenerife’s South Hospital, part of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
The contract covers the preparation of the technical plans required before construction can begin and is expected to take 10 months to complete.
Expanded facilities and new specialist units
The project is designed to significantly increase the hospital’s capacity and improve healthcare services for residents across southern Tenerife.
Planned improvements include completing two existing structural modules, creating new Critical Care and Haemodynamics units, expanding the Emergency Department, increasing outpatient consultation areas, improving diagnostic imaging services and upgrading the hospital’s operating theatres.
The redevelopment will also include new infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity and the overall efficiency of the hospital.
Recent improvements already underway
The expansion follows a number of recent improvements to services at the South Hospital.
Among the latest additions are a Palliative Care Unit and an Early Intervention Unit for children under six living in southern Tenerife. The hospital has also introduced new treatment techniques for bladder and breast cancer patients.
Over the past two years, the hospital has incorporated its own Laboratory and Hospital Pharmacy, while the installation of a new CT scanner has reduced the need for patients to travel to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria for specialist diagnostic tests and treatments.
The new contract represents another important step in strengthening healthcare provision for the rapidly growing population of southern Tenerife.
