Why Scotland’s Flag Looks Almost Identical to Tenerife’s

As the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 captures the attention of football fans around the world, many people in the Canary Islands have noticed a striking similarity: Scotland’s national flag looks almost identical to Tenerife’s.

Both feature a white diagonal cross on a blue background, making them one of the world’s most recognisable and easily confused flags. While they may look almost the same, their origins are surprisingly different.

Scotland’s St Andrew’s Cross

Scotland’s flag, known as the Saltire, is one of the oldest national flags in the world.

According to tradition, during a battle in the 9th century, Scottish forces saw a cloud formation in the shape of a white diagonal cross against the blue sky. The victory that followed was interpreted as a sign from Saint Andrew, who later became Scotland’s patron saint.

From that moment, the white Saltire on a blue background became Scotland’s national symbol.

Tenerife’s Maritime Origins

Tenerife’s flag shares the same design, but its history has nothing to do with medieval legends.

Instead, it originated from the maritime flag of the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, inherited from the former Canary Islands maritime province.

In 1845, a royal order assigned Canary Islands vessels a blue flag bearing a white diagonal cross to identify ships registered in the archipelago. Although the design matched Scotland’s Saltire, its purpose was entirely practical and linked to maritime registration rather than religious tradition.

Official Island Flag Since 1989

Over time, the maritime flag became closely associated with Tenerife itself.

In 1989, the Cabildo of Tenerife officially adopted it as the island’s flag, specifying the familiar design of a white diagonal cross on a dark navy blue background, slightly darker than the shade used on Scotland’s flag.

The coincidence is particularly fitting, as Saint Andrew is also widely celebrated in parts of Tenerife, especially in Icod de los Vinos, where annual festivities are held in his honour.

Two Flags, Two Very Different Stories

Although Scotland and Tenerife are separated by thousands of kilometres, they now share one of the world’s most recognisable flag designs.

Scotland’s flag is rooted in legend and religious tradition, while Tenerife’s developed through the island’s maritime history.

One, according to tradition, was inspired by a sign in the sky. The other arrived by sea.
