The Magic of San Juan Lights Up Tenerife Once Again

Bonfires blazed across Tenerife last night as communities gathered to celebrate San Juan, one of the island’s most cherished traditions.

From the streets of La Laguna to the mountains of Icod de los Vinos, where the traditional hachitos illuminated the hillsides, thousands of people came together to welcome the arrival of summer with fire, music and centuries-old customs.

A Night of Fire, Tradition and Celebration

San Juan remains one of the most symbolic nights of the year in Tenerife. Families, friends and neighbours gathered around bonfires to share food, enjoy music and take part in rituals believed to bring good fortune and renewal.

One of the most popular traditions is jumping over the flames, a custom linked to purification and leaving behind negative experiences. In years gone by, young women would often take part while repeating the well-known saying:

“Jump, young maidens, through the fire of Saint John; those who do not jump will remain single.”

Ancient Origins

Although San Juan is now celebrated as a religious festival on the eve of 24th June, its roots stretch back much further to ancient solstice celebrations, when communities honoured the sun at its strongest point of the year.

Historian José de Viera y Clavijo also linked the modern celebration in Tenerife to a devastating epidemic that affected La Laguna and Santa Cruz in the late 16th century. According to historical accounts, prayers to San Juan Bautista were credited with helping bring an end to the outbreak, leading to his designation as protector against the plague in 1582.

A Symbol of Renewal

Over the centuries, local celebrations included unique traditions such as flower and fruit arches, traditional dances and even Canary wrestling exhibitions. While some of these customs have gradually disappeared, the bonfire remains at the heart of the celebration.

For many, the lighting of the fire symbolises a chance to burn away worries, negativity and bad luck, embracing a fresh start as summer begins.

Across Tenerife, San Juan once again brought together generations of residents and visitors for a night where tradition, community and a touch of magic continue to thrive.
