A beloved symbol of Los Realejos has been given a new lease of life after local mural artist Adán Pérez Farráis created a striking tribute to the historic dragon tree of San Francisco, which was destroyed during Storm Regina in March 2026.
The original tree, which stood for more than 200 years and reached a height of 17 metres, was a landmark for generations of residents. Now, thanks to a mural measuring almost 12 metres high and 6 metres wide, its memory continues to watch over the neighbourhood.
A Symbol of the Community
For many local residents, the dragon tree was far more than a tree. It served as a meeting point, a local landmark, and a place filled with personal memories.
Following requests from local residents, Los Realejos Town Hall approached Pérez Farráis to create a permanent tribute. The artist immediately accepted the project, describing it as a gift to the community and a way of preserving an important part of the area’s identity.
A Challenging Project
Creating the mural was not without difficulties. Due to the steep location and the size of the wall, finding suitable equipment proved challenging. Eventually, a crane was secured, allowing the artist to work at height and properly view the piece as it developed.
Before painting could begin, the wall required extensive preparation, including cleaning, sanding, repairs, and the application of several layers of protective paint. The textured surface meant significantly more materials were needed than would normally be required on a smooth wall.
The artwork itself was completed in around a week, following several days of preparation work.
Art That Preserves Memories
Residents have already embraced the mural, with many stopping to admire the artwork and reflect on their connection to the original tree.
For those who grew up in the area, the dragon tree represented a constant presence in everyday life. The mural now serves as both a visual landmark and a reminder of the generations who gathered beneath its branches.
From Childhood Passion to Professional Career
Pérez Farráis has become one of the most recognised mural artists in northern Tenerife, but his journey began as a child with a passion for drawing and painting.
He created his first graffiti artwork at just 13 years old and spent years developing his technique before turning his passion into a profession. Today, he has more than a decade of professional experience and has produced several notable works across the island.
With the completion of the San Francisco dragon tree mural, one of Los Realejos’ most cherished symbols has found a new home, ensuring its story remains part of the community for years to come.
