Corpus Christi 2026 in La Laguna: Tenerife Prepares for One of Its Most Beautiful Traditions

Tenerife barely gets time to recover from the romerías before the island quietly switches gears again.

Next up…

Corpus Christi.

And if you’ve never seen La Laguna or La Orotava during Corpus, it’s worth putting in the diary.

The streets change completely.

Flowers, coloured volcanic sand, carpets covering entire roads and people working through the night to create them.

It’s one of those traditions that still stops people in their tracks.

When is Corpus Christi in 2026?

Officially, Corpus Christi 2026 falls on:

📅 Thursday 4 June 2026

The celebration takes place 60 days after Easter Sunday and follows Trinity Sunday in the Catholic calendar.

However, many dioceses move the main celebration to the following Sunday to allow greater attendance.

What is Corpus Christi?

Corpus Christi, meaning “Body of Christ”, is one of the most important celebrations in the Catholic Church.

The festival focuses on the Eucharist and public expressions of devotion through processions and decorated streets.

Across Spain it’s celebrated in many cities including:

• Toledo
• Seville
• Granada
• Valencia
• Madrid

And here in Tenerife…

La Laguna and La Orotava are among the best known celebrations.

Corpus in La Laguna

La Laguna transforms during Corpus.

Traditional flower carpets appear throughout the historic centre and preparations often begin the night before.

The atmosphere feels very different from the romerías.

Quieter.

More reflective.

But still deeply connected to local tradition.

La Orotava’s Famous Sand Carpets

Then there’s La Orotava.

Probably the most famous Corpus celebration in Tenerife.

The town is known internationally for its extraordinary carpets created using coloured volcanic sands from Teide National Park, flowers and natural materials.

Some of the designs are massive.

And every year people somehow manage to make them even more detailed.

It’s slightly mind-blowing really when you remember they disappear once the procession passes.

From Romerías Straight into Corpus

May in Tenerife belongs to romerías.

June starts with Corpus.

There’s barely time to put the traje de mago away before another tradition appears.

That’s Tenerife really.

Always another fiesta around the corner.
