Santa Cruz keeps talking about the housing crisis…
But at least in this case, actual construction is happening instead of endless meetings and PowerPoint presentations.
37 Public Housing Homes Under Construction
The city’s latest public housing project is moving forward in:
📍 María Jiménez — Anaga district
📍 La Portada Street
Where construction is already underway for:
🏠 37 protected public housing units
🚗 37 parking spaces
The project is being developed jointly between:
- Santa Cruz City Council
- Cabildo de Tenerife
- Government of the Canary Islands
A Bigger Housing Push Across Santa Cruz
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez visited the site this week alongside regional and island officials, highlighting the municipality’s wider public housing plans.
According to the council, Santa Cruz currently accounts for:
🏗 More than half of all new housing construction taking place in Tenerife
Which says quite a lot about the scale of the housing problem across the island.
More Projects Planned
Alongside María Jiménez, another major development is also planned for:
📍 Cuevas Blancas
Where an additional:
🏠 226 public housing units
Are expected to begin construction this summer.
Different Housing Types Included
The María Jiménez building will include a mix of homes aimed at different family needs, including:
- One-bedroom apartments
- Two-bedroom homes
- Accessible housing for people with reduced mobility
- Three-bedroom family units
- Larger four and five-bedroom properties
Investment Totals More Than €25 Million
The overall funding package between the different administrations now exceeds:
💶 €25 million
With:
💶 €19 million from the Canary Islands Government
💶 €6 million from the Cabildo de Tenerife
While Santa Cruz City Council contributed the land for development.
Expected Completion Date
Construction officially began in:
📅 October 2024
With completion currently expected by:
📅 February 2027
So realistically… probably sometime after everyone argues about paperwork for another while.
Worth Knowing
Housing remains one of Tenerife’s biggest political and social issues right now.
So while 37 homes won’t solve the wider problem…
Actually building something is still more progress than people have seen for years.
