This one’s been sitting there for years…
Shut, forgotten, and a bit of a “what happened here?” spot in the middle of Icod.
Now it looks like it’s finally moving again.
What’s Happening
The town hall has launched a €1M+ renovation project to bring the municipal market back to life after 26 years closed.
If it goes to plan, works should take around 8 months.
What It Will Include
They’re not just reopening it as it was.
The idea is to mix things up a bit:
- 29 retail units
- Extra commercial spaces
- A café and kitchen
- Meeting room and info point
So part traditional market… part modern social space.
A Bit of History
The market originally opened in the late 80s and was once the go-to place in town…
Fruit, meat, fish… even a haircut if you needed one.
Since it closed in the 90s, there have been a few attempts to revive it… none of them stuck.
This Time Around
The plan is being done in phases:
First, fixing the structure and access… then moving on to the ground floor.
Nothing too drastic structurally… more about making it usable again.
They’re also keeping an eye on things like:
- Noise during works
- Water use
- Energy and safety systems
Why It Matters
Places like this aren’t just buildings.
They’re part of how a town actually works day to day.
If it’s done right… it could bring a bit of life back into that area again.
Worth Watching
It’s not the first attempt…
…but it might finally be the one that sticks.
