CD Tenerife has added a slightly unusual trophy to its collection.
The Tenerife side lifted the Pepino de Oro, or Golden Cucumber, on 8 August after beating CD Leganés in the Villa de Leganés Trophy.
The match finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, with Tenerife eventually winning the penalty shootout 4-3.
Not exactly a thriller, but pre-season football rarely is.
A goalless afternoon
The match at the Estadio Municipal José de Cisneros had all the usual ingredients of a pre-season game.
Both sides are preparing for the upcoming Liga Hypermotion season, and neither seemed particularly interested in giving too much away.
There were plenty of substitutions, cautious play and very few clear chances.
After 90 minutes, neither team had managed to find the net, leaving penalties to decide who would take home the trophy.
Tenerife held its nerve better, winning the shootout 4-3.
Tenerife gets the Golden Cucumber
After the final penalty, the Tenerife captain lifted the Pepino de Oro, while Leganés received the Pepino de Plata as runners-up.
And yes, it really is a golden cucumber.
The slightly bizarre trophy has become part of the tradition surrounding the Villa de Leganés Trophy, which has now been running for 46 years.
Leganés’ club mascot is a cucumber, hence the rather unusual choice of trophy.
For several years, the winner has received a golden replica of the vegetable mounted on a pedestal.
So while it might not have quite the same ring as lifting the Champions League trophy, CD Tenerife now has a Golden Cucumber to show for its pre-season efforts.
We’ll take it.
