There are restaurants where ordering a half portion is a sensible way to try a few different dishes.
Then there are places like Bodegón El Esperancero, where the half portion apparently needs its own postcode.
You’ll find it in Casas Altas, Tacoronte, serving traditional food at reasonable prices and, if the experience of food creators @guachinchesmodernos is anything to go by, portions that are anything but half-hearted.
They described it as possibly having some of the biggest and cheapest half portions on the island.
Plenty to share
The visit started with stuffed eggs with tuna, onion and peppers, followed by a half portion of peas, which was apparently generous enough for two people.
They also tried a casserole of rice and fish, described as being somewhere between a fish soup and a rice dish.
So far, so traditional.
Then came the meatballs.
The meatballs are the ones to order
The standout dish was a portion of meatballs made with pork and beef, served with sauce and chips.
The size of the meatballs caught their attention immediately.
According to the visitors, they were the biggest meatballs they’d ever seen.
That’s quite a claim when you’re talking about meatballs.
The generous portions were one of the main things they picked up on during the visit. Even the half portions are substantial, making them a good option if you’re eating with a few people and want to try several dishes without ordering half the menu.
Don’t forget dessert
To finish, they tried a bizcochón and a rosquete, with Jonay having his alongside a coffee.
The verdict on the desserts was that they were a little unusual and definitely worth trying.
It’s the sort of place where the food sounds straightforward, but the portions are clearly part of the attraction.
